Call for Action for Sept 30, 2017

I don't usually wake up on a Saturday morning and write up a series of urgent #actions before I've even crawled out of bed BUT WHEN I DO it's because "the president" has shown himself, once again, to be an unfathomably foolish, embarrassing, disgraceful racist "person" and we we need to use that to make A LOT of noise about the need for IMMEDIATE aid to Puerto Rico AND a mass condemnation of his shit.

To recap: On Friday San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz held a powerful press conference last night, announcing that "people are DYING", imploring the media to send an SOS to the entire wrld, and doing what NO other officials in PR have dared to do (and who would blame them? they all fear the idiot's wrath!)—directly criticize the slow US gov't response. She did something that women leaders so rarely do: she dared to get emotional, to be real + honest (yet completely composed + fierce) in a moment of utter crisis.

In response, 45 woke up (AT HIS GOLF COURSE, ok? HE IS LITERALLY SPENDING THE WEEKEND GOLFING) and crapped all over Twitter, tweeting "The mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump" and "Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help." AND WHY STOP THERE? He added "They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job." They. Want. Everything. Done. For. Them. "They" are American citizens on a devastated island who are DYING. (Need a history reminder? PR has been a non-voting American territory, aka a damn colony, since 1898, along with Guam and the Philippines.…/puerto-ricos-complicated-history-w…)

OMG guys. GUYS! YA'LL! This is an elected official who is working 24-7 in desperate conditions, surrounded by others doing the same. Here is what we do:

#ACTION CALL YOUR SENATORS AND YOUR HOUSE REPS It's the weekend, so let's fill their voicemails and inboxes.

"My name is ________ and I am writing/calling for two reasons: 1) To implore you and your Congressional colleagues to do EVERYTHING in your power to get immediate aid to the people of Puerto Rico. These are American citizens who are suffering beyond belief and they need help NOW 2) To register my absolute disgust at the comments made by Donald Trump. While humans suffer a massive crisis he tweets insults from his golf course? He is a disgrace, as is ANY one of his colleagues who doesn't immediately reject his ignorant words. [if your rep is GOP, add some choice words about their complicity]"

#ACTION Share your thoughts about it on social media. If you have Trump-y friends + family, this is yet another moment to call on them: who can stand with this man? It shouldn't MATTER that PR is a US territory, that these are US citizens we're talking about, but alas, it's something to point out. At the same time, please keep the colonial context of PR in mind—Puerto Rico is not U.S. soil, it is colonized Puerto Rican soil.

#ACTION Write a letter to your local paper—feel free to crib any of my language here. Keep it short, under 200 words. We need to prioritize the crisis in PR while also keeping his disgusting response in the spotlight.

#ACTION DONATE DONATE DONATE It is so deeply hard to feel this helpless. The best most of us can do is to donate whatever we can, and support and amplify the needs and efforts of rescue and aid organizations on the ground.…/maria-puerto-rico-real-time-re…

#ACTION Learn about and highlight the *ACTUAL EFFORTS TO HELP* that people are making. Yes we need to keep His Stupidity in focus, but ALSO share stories about effective, powerful rescue + aid efforts:…
