SolSun Call for Action for May 31

**SOLIDARITY SUNDAYS DAILY ACTIONS***
Wed May 31, 2017

Sigh. It's all fun and covfefe until someone tries to pull out of the Paris Accord. #ACTIONS below. Read on, my covfefe friends.

On May 27th, Trump tweeted "I will make my final decision on the Paris Accord next week!" Then last night he tweeted nonsense and passed out, and today when he woke up and climbed out of his crib he tweeted ""I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Many media outlets are reporting he has already decided to leave the Paris Agreement. If he did this, the U.S. would join TWO countries who have not signed on: Syria and Nicaragua. Uzbekistan was the other hold out, and they just finally signed on. Syria is busy destroying itself with a 6-year civil war, and Nicaragua won't sign because the accord is not strong enough—a show of anti-imperialist resistance, essentially.

Some are arguing that 45's tweet this morning is a teasing distraction (from #covfefe, from Russia, from the sad failing health care bill and the sad failing budget, etc). That's likely a little bit true, but there is enough sound reporting to confirm that he's been mulling this major decision over for some time, and is likely to announce soon. It's ALSO quite possible that he'll announce that we'll remain, but will try to renegotiate and lower our emission targets (which is also not acceptable).

We all know 45 likely has no idea what the Paris Accord actually IS, and is just responding to the loudest sounds around him. Tillerson, Kushner, Ivanka, big corps like Exxon, and the majority of world leaders are urging him to stay. Bannon, Pruitt, and Mitch McConnell and his band of craven lowest common denominators are pushing to leave.

The 2016 ratification of the Paris Agreement was an unprecedented global response to climate change. The Agreement's 143 signatories, including the United States, formally committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to slow the pace of climate change.

When the United States ratified the Agreement last October, President Obama remarked, "If we follow through on the commitments this agreement embodies, history will judge it as a turning point for our planet." Withdrawing from the Agreement would represent a very different kind of turning point--a moment when our nation refused to meet the pressing threat of climate change head-on, committing instead to protecting the interests of fossil fuel companies.
