THE "I" WORD
IMPEACHMENT—It's out there. They're talking about it. They're writing think pieces, they're saying it on the radio. Whatever you think about this option, we've reached atipping point and it's being publicly acknowledged in a way we haven't yet seen. It's moved from the far left/activist conversations to the mainstream—Maxine Waters has been at it for a while, but now Rep. Al Green is calling for it, and today GOP Rep. Amash (MI) said that if the Comey memo is true, it is grounds for impeachment. There are MANY arguments to be made and had about impeachment—whether it's even possible (I'd say that, at this point, anything is possible!), whether it's a good idea because then we end up with Pence. To that point, I defer to Rebecca Solnit:
"I keep hearing people say: if we get rid of Trump, then Pence becomes president. But:
--We now have Trump and Pence, so we have Pence anyway and already. (Thanks, Taj James, for that point.)
--If Trump is deposed, impeached, or resigns, Pence becomes like Gerald Ford ( without the charm), a caretaker inheritor of a contaminated mess. He'd be an unpopular president without a mandate. Not that Trump has a mandate, but he and some of his followers believe he does.
--If Trump has to resign because his campaign colluded with a foreign power, then maybe Pence does too. [Evidence of Pence's collusion continues to appear.]
--The whole argument sounds kind of like "if we escape from prison we might get hit by a car" or "if I get cured of cancer, I might have to attend my stepmother's 80th birthday." Let's just break free, do what's right, and see what emerges, because we don't actually know what will happen. I mean, maybe Pence's handsome lover will phone in the secret history. You never know."
Anyway. We will undoubtably be having this conversation for some time (Or maybe not! Maybe it all ends tomorrow! WHO THE F*&K KNOWS!) For now, ONE THING IS CLEAR: KEEP MAKING CALLS. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON. THE GOP IS FEELING THE HEAT BIG TIME AND THE MEDIA IS ALL OVER THIS. CALL REPUBLICANS EVEN IF THEY'RE NOT YOUR REPS. KEEP UP THE NOISE, KEEP IT LOUD!
1. #ACTION: Call your HOUSE REP and urge them to support HR 356, which calls for an independent commission on Russia's interference in our election. Representative Eric Swalwell is leading the bill and already has two Republican co-sponsors, so TODAY is the day to push hard and let your Representative know that you're watching.
(From 5calls) Rep. Pelosi is filing the discharge petition on Weds 5/17 to force a vote on HR 356, legislation to create an independent commission. In light of Comey's memo describing Trump's request that he stop the investigation into Flynn and Russia, there is growing motivation among Congressional Republicans to support the independent investigation.
On May 10th, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wrote a letter to Speaker Ryan urging for him to bring H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, to an immediate vote on the floor as soon as the House reconvenes the week of May 15th. The bipartisan bill, sponsored by Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), would establish an independent commission of 12 non-governmental appointees to fully investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and any potential ties to the Trump campaign.
If Speaker Ryan fails to bring this bill to the floor immediately, Pelosi will file a discharge petition: a parliamentarian procedure that allows a bill to be brought to the floor without passing through committee. If a simple majority of House members sign the discharge petition, Pelosi can force a floor vote on the measure. Currently, every Democrat has agreed to sign the petition.
While a special prosecutor is clearly needed after the abrupt firing of FBI Director Comey, especially given the role AG Sessions and Deputy AG Rosenstein played in the decision, an independent commission is still needed to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. A special prosecutor will be able to press criminal charges if necessary, but he/she could still be controlled or even fired. An independent commission, however, would have more autonomy and will produce an extensive, conclusive report of its findings, including information of wrongdoings that may not warrant criminal charges but is still vital for the American public to know.
#ACTION: CALL YOUR HOUSE REP
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from _______. I'm calling to ask that Rep. _____ support the bipartisan bill H.R. 356, and if necessary, sign a discharge petition to bring the bill to an immediate vote on the House floor. An independent commission is needed as soon as possible to remove the political games that have been hindering the investigation into Russia's interference in our election."
2. #ACTION CALL YOUR SENATORS AND DEMAND THAT THEY DEMAND THAT THEY REFUSE TO DO SENATE BUSINESS UNTIL THE APPOINTMENT OF A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR AND THE COMEY MEMO
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from ____.
I'm calling to demand that [SEN/REP NAME] refuse to take part in any Senate business, especially the appointing or confirming of any new members of the Trump administration until a special prosecutor is appointed for the Russia investigation. This is all so outrageous and unbelievable—I need my Senator to stand up and refuse to allow our country to be destroyed by this incompetent man and his cronies."
