Wheeeeew. First things first: Our first #Action for today is, yet again, CALLING FOR THE RESIGNATION OF JEFF SESSIONS. Yes, we did this for two days last week, and yes lots has happened since then (Trump tweeted! Wire tapp! New Muslim ban!) but here's the thing: They are trying to distract from the Sessions story, and Crazy Trump Tweets sent from his golden toilet at Mar-A-Lago are little bits of magical media bait. The "revised" Muslim Ban was supposed to be released a while ago—it was gonna be two weeks ago, then it was gonna be last Wednesday, but they held off so he could bask in the glow of his amazing speech. It is NOT a coincidence that the insane tweets accusing Obama of Watergate-level wiretapping AND the new Ban have happened immediately after one of the most potentially damaging scandals.
So! We WILL have action on the new (still horrible, don't get it twisted) ban, but for today we let MoCs know that we have not forgotten that Jeff Sessions LIED. L-I-E-D under O-A-T-H. Which is known as P-E-R-J-U-R-Y. Which is I-L-L-E-G-A-L. Let's also not forget that Sessions is widely seen as one of the main architects of the Muslim Ban.
1. #ACTION: Call your MoCs (all 3 of em) and let them know that you demand the resignation of AG Jeff Sessions. *Many MoCs have taken a stance on this by now—take a minute to look your up and see what they've said on Sessions. Then choose from the following scripts:
IF MoC HAS CALLED FOR RESIGNATION:
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to thank [____] for calling for the RESIGNATION of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Recusal is not enough—this man lied under oath. What can I as a citizen do to help support this effort?"
IF MoC CALLED FOR RECUSAL BUT NOT RESIGNATION:
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling in support of the RESIGNATION of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. I know that [_____] called for his recusal, but recusal is not enough—this man lied under oath. How can [_______] NOT call for resignation when his lies are so clear?"
IF MoC SUPPORTS SESSIONS/HASN'T COMMENTED:
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling in support of the RESIGNATION of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Recusal is not enough—this man lied under oath. That is perjury, and it is not acceptable for our Attorney General to lie."
#ACTION Call the House Judiciary Committee +1 202-225-3951
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to demand a full and independent investigation into Jeff Sessions' misleading, and possibly perjurious, testimony about Russia. The American people deserve an attorney general whom we can trust to tell the truth."
2. [from 5calls.org] FAIR PAY + SAFE WORKPLACES EXEC ORDER
President Obama issued the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces executive order to require that major federal contractors comply with workplace safety, sexual harassment, anti-discrimination, and minimum wage and overtime laws. Under this order, federal contractors bidding for federal contracts worth more than $500,000 must report violations of worker protection laws. Companies with past violations must work with federal agencies to remedy their workplace issues before they can receive a contract. As the Department of Labor stated in their FAQ page about the law, "The federal government should be doing business only with companies that comply with laws that protect workers' safety, wages, and civil rights.”
However, the House has caved under pressure from big businesses and passed HJ Res 37, a Congressional Review Act repeal of this worker protection rule. Businesses should not receive billions of taxpayer dollars if they exploit their workers, allow sexual harassment and racial discrimination, or subject their employees to unsafe labor conditions. Now, if the Senate votes to reverse the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces rules, this is exactly what will happen.
The Senate will vote on HJ Res 37 on Monday, March 6th at approximately 6pm EST. If passed, the resolution will head to the President's desk and the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces rule will be gone.
#ACTION Call YOUR SENATORS
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to ask the Senator to oppose HJ Resolution 37, which would eliminate the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces rule. It's unacceptable for Congress to allow companies who exploit their employees and permit harassment and discrimination to receive billions in taxpayer dollars."
