SolSun Call for Action for March 27th

***SOLIDARITY SUNDAYS DAILY ACTIONS***
Monday, March 27, 2017

First off: YAY HEALTHCARE. Let's be honest: Friday's epic GOP fail was cause for some serious schadenfreude. After 7 years of the GOP promising to repeal Obamacare, and after a zillion speeches by 45 promising he'd do it right away, because he's an amazing dealmaker, they couldn't get it together. Does that mean the fight for healthcare is over? Nope. Not at all. We can't forget that many of the GOP members who remained firmly opposed to Ryan's bill did so because it wasn't harsh enough—they want to defund Planned Parenthood, eliminate Medicaid, etc, and they're gonna keep pushing for that. At the same time, though, don't think for a second that the bill's failure wasn't related to the immense amount of work and pressure from The Resistance. There were a number of moderate/non-Freedom Caucus GOP members who heard and saw the uproar from their districts, and didn't support the bill. The townhalls and enormous volumes of phonecalls, letters, postcards, emails, etc, helped keep the issue front + center in the news, and made it impossible for Reps to ignore the public outcry. So: GOOD JOB.

Now: ONWARD.

I'm gonna make the Gorsuch/Russia investigation calls permanent this week, and will cycle in other issues are well. But those are the top national issues that need sustained, enormous pressure. I get that it's kind of boring calling about the same thing everyday, but it's important! Russiagate is so freakin complicated and new details are breaking and emerging everyday—I'm working hard to follow the threads, but there is also a lot of unverified speculation out there (esp on Twitter!) so I'm gonna take a cautious approach and stick to relaying only verified reports from major media sources.

1) GORSUCH: Today the Dems on the Senate Judiciary Committee delayed the key committee Gorsuch vote until next Monday. So we have another week to call call call.

Keepin' this script simple:

#ACTION CALL YOUR SENATORS:

"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to express my opposition to the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. President Trump is currently under FBI investigation for his ties to Russia and must not be allowed to appoint a justice given the unresolved questions about his presidency's legitimacy."

2) INDEPENDENT RUSSIA INVESTIGATION NEEDED [text from 5calls.org]

On Monday, March 20th, the House Intelligence Committee began its public hearing on the Trump-Russia connections, calling upon FBI Director Comey and NSA Director Mike Rogers to testify. Both intelligence leaders stated under oath that a classified investigation into connections between Russia and the Trump campaign began in late July. This adds confidence to the mounting evidence that has come to light in recent months, including communications between the Russians and Jeff Sessions, Mike Flynn, Paul Manafort, Carter Page, and Roger Stone.

During the hearing, however, Devin Nunes, Trey Gowdy, and other GOP Congressmen used their time to focus on leaks to the press instead of the Russian interference into the election or the possibility of the Trump campaign having knowledge of their attempts. Their line of questioning during this crucial public hearing proves that political loyalty is their priority, not getting to the truth.

This investigation can no longer remain dependent on partisan congressional committees. An independent 9/11-style special commission into Russia's interference must be established.

#ACTION Call your HOUSE REP

"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to request that a 9/11-style independent commission to be established to investigate the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The House Intelligence Committee's hearing was clouded by political agendas, and it is imperative to remove the partisan politics from the equation in order to get to the truth. Thank you for your time and attention."

3) SESSIONS + SANCTUARY CITIES

The official DOJ crackdown on sanctuary cities/states has begun: this morning AG Sessions announced that "State and local governments seeking Justice Department grants must certify they are not so-called sanctuary cities in order to receive the money." He railed against sanctuary cities, and also specifically called out Maryland's efforts to become a sanctuary state.

#ACTION If your city, county, or state is IN THE PROCESS of deciding sanctuary status, now is a good time to SHOW SUPPORT. These federal threats are intended to intimidate and halt these efforts, so vocal, visible support is even more important! Take some time to find out where YOUR city/state is with this. Are there hearings coming up? City councils meetings?

#ACTION If your city HAS announced sanctuary status, now is a good time to FOLLOW UP on that—call your mayor and ask how the city plans to respond to threats like this.

Finally, no matter where your city/state stands on the issue, another #ACTION to take is to identify and reach out to the organizations in your area who work for immigrant rights, and who support those most affected by ICE raids/deportations/immigrant rights violations. Because sanctuary status is still, at this point, more conceptual than it is legally-binding. These organizations are the ones who are truly doing to work to protect and defend immigrant citizens—reach out and see how YOU can support!
