UPDATE: CNN REPORTS THAT SHE HAS BEEN DEPORTED.
Today we focus on one story, one family, and one woman, both because they need our support, and because it is indicative of what will happen to SO many more families under DT's racist, xenophobic regime. Guadalupe "Lupita" Garcia de Rayos, a Phoenix mother of two, appears to be the first Mexican immigrant threatened with deportation under Tr*mp's new anti-immigrant policies. To clarify: After ALL this talk of "dangerous" and "illegal" criminals and drug dealers who make America unsafe, the first person to potentially be deported is a LAW-ABIDING MOTHER. She was arrested and detained on Wed 2/8 when she showed up for her regular immigration check with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), which she has done consistently for 8 years, since being caught using a false SSN when she was swept up in an immigration raid under Sheriff Joe Arpaio in 2008. She served 6 months, and the Obama administration decided not to deport her. Rayos came to the U.S. at age 14, and has not been back to Mexico since. She is a hardworking, taxpaying wife and mother with no criminal record, aside from her use of a false SSN. As her daughter said to the New York Times, her only crime "was to go to work to give a better life for her children."
Last night (Wednesday) large demonstrations were held in Phoenix to support her and to decry her deportation. 40-50 people surrounded the van that was taking her away. Police were called in, and 7 protesters were arrested. Her two teenage children were on the front lines of these protests, trying to save their mother.
The following actions come from the migrant justice grassroots organization Puente Human Rights Movement; I have updated them slightly.
1. Call Senator John McCain: ask him to stand with
Guadalupe and her family. Tell him you're outraged that she's been deported and torn away from her family. Tell him that deporting mothers with no drug or criminal offenses does NOT make us safer.
602-952-2410 (Phoenix office, may be hard to leave a msg)
2. Call the Phoenix ICE office and ask why they're deporting hardworking mothers and how that makes us "safer". Tell them they've stolen a mother from her family.
Phoenix ICE: (602) 766-7030 (press 1, then press 9 to speak to a real person.)
3. Call the Dept of Homeland Security's Public Comment line and leave a comment about the cruel deportation of Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos
Public comment line: 202-282-8495
4. Follow #FreeLupita on twitter for updates (be prepared for deplorable trolls tho). Also follow @Puente AZ for updates
