***SOLIDARITY SUNDAYS DAILY ACTIONS***
SO many fires to put out, SO many things to be outraged about. Let's go back to "basics" today. Basics like...HUGE SCANDALS AND RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE!
Actions 1 & 2 come from 5Calls.org (with edits/updates from me) and both concern the House—note that if you can't get through, you can send emails. Or do both. Also note that, ideally, you should make two separate calls/send separate emails so that your stance on each issue can be tallied accurately.
1. URGE THE JUSTICE DEPT REVEAL TRUMP INVESTIGATION INFORMATION
On Thursday, Feb 23, it was reported that White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus asked an FBI Deputy Director to refute a New York Times report that Trump associates were in regular contact with Russians during the campaign. It is against longstanding rules that the White House does not communicate with the FBI during ongoing investigations, especially investigations that involve the White House administration itself, in order to avoid foul play or obstruction of justice. It seems Reince Priebus has broken this rule and potentially meddled in the investigation.
Today, Nancy Pelosi called for a DOJ probe, saying: “White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has committed an outrageous breach of the FBI’s independence. Priebus has not only damaged his reputation but tainted the impartiality of the FBI. The Department of Justice’s Inspector General must open a new investigation into any and all conversations Priebus and other White House officials held with the FBI on ongoing investigations. The American people deserve to know the truth.”
In order to preserve the independence of the Trump investigations, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, filed a Resolution of Inquiry, a special legislative tool that has “privileged parliamentary status." Through the Resolution of Inquiry, Nadler has requested that the Justice Department release any and all “criminal or counterintelligence investigations” into Trump and his team. If the resolution passes, the Justice Department must reveal its findings on Trump and his associates to Congress. It is perhaps the only parliamentary way for Congress to pull the investigation out from underneath White House control and preserve its integrity.
The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Nadler's Resolution of Inquiry on Tuesday, Feb 28.
#ACTION: Call your House Rep (Ideally make this a SEPARATE CALL FROM THE ONE ABOVE. Literally call twice.)
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to express my support for Congressman Nadler's Resolution of Inquiry. In light of White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus's communication with the FBI, it is imperative that the Justice Department now release all information regarding the Trump campaign investigation to Congress."
2. BIPARTISAN RUSSIAN INVESTIGATION/HR 356:
Despite the mounting evidence of Russia's close partnership with the Trump administration, investigations of the Trump-Russia connection are currently dependent on partisan congressional committees. House Republicans like House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes have continually resisted calls for a thorough investigation of Russian electoral interference. To ensure an independent investigation of the Trump-Russia connection, 198 House Democrats and one House Republican (Walter Jones, NC-3) are co-sponsoring HR 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act. The bill would establish an independent, 12-member commission to fully examine Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Our nation's electoral integrity is not a partisan issue. House representatives from BOTH sides of the aisle must support an independent investigation of Russia's electoral interference.
#ACTION: IF YOUR HOUSE REP IS GOP, CALL AND SAY THIS:
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to express my support for HR 356, and to request that Rep______ sign on as a co-sponsor. We need an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. There is NO room for partisan politics around an issue that threatens the integrity of our democracy."
#ACTION IF YOUR HOUSE REP IS DEM:
"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to thank Rep.______ for co-sponsoring HR 356, which would establish an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. There is no room for partisan politics around an issue that threatens the integrity of our democracy."
(If your Rep IS Walter Jones, call and thank him!)
